Cullen Lakes Loon Conservation Project

As of 2023, the Cullen Lakes Association is partnering with the DNR and MPCA on an eight-county project that aims to reduce loon mortality and increase the number of young loons produced in Minnesota.

Our role is largely to monitor loon numbers, chick production, nesting sites and to help with artificial nesting structures if deemed necessary. We’ll also collect unwanted lead fishing tackle at our annual meeting as lead is a neurotoxin known to kill loons if they ingest it.

Our volunteerism comes at no expense to the association. Click here to learn more about this northern Minnesota effort, which is a direct outcome of the Deep Water Horizon oil spill settlement. https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/eco/nongame/minnesota-loon-restoration-project.html
